Hong US lifts Gulf of Mexico deepwater oil drilling ban

WASHINGTON—The United States on Tuesday lifted a ban on deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico imposed after the BP oil spill, but set operators tough new safety conditions, officials said.

"We have decided it is now appropriate to lift the suspension on deepwater drilling for those operators that are able to clear the higher bar that we have set" for safety, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said.

Shortly after the BP oil disaster began in April, President Barack Obama ordered a six-month freeze on deepwater offshore oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. The moratorium was due to expire at the end of next month.

The new rules, which were laid out by the Interior Department two weeks ago, toughen up companies' obligations on drilling and workplace safety, well containment and spill response, he said.

They were crafted in the wake of the blowout on a BP deepwater well that killed 11 rig workers and sparked the worst oil disaster in US history, the effects of which are still being felt in Gulf Coast states.

Key among the tough new rules for deepwater drilling is an obligation for the CEO of any company wishing to drill in deep water to "certify that the rig has complied with all new and existing rules," said Salazar.

Executives from the companies involved in the BP-leased well that blew out in April have blamed each other for the accident which happened some 50 miles (80 kilometers) off the coast of Louisiana.

Environmental group Greenpeace called the end of the ban on deepwater drilling "pure politics of the most cynical kind."

"Scientists haven't even assessed the full ecological impact of the BP disaster and yet the government is in a rush to allow oil companies to get back to drilling. It is irresponsible to say the least, reckless at worst," said Greenpeace USA director Phil Radford.

Peter Lehner, executive director of the Natural Resources Defense Council, said the moratorium was being lifted "prematurely."

"To ensure a disaster like this never happens again, we must know what caused it in the first place. We’re still waiting for that answer and until we get it, the moratorium should remain in place," he said.

Louisiana Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu, who has called the moratorium an "uninformed" and "reckless" move that endangered the environment, national security and jobs, welcomed Tuesday's announcement as "a step in the right direction."

"But it must be accompanied by an action plan to get the entire industry in the Gulf of Mexico back to work," including an acceleration of the permitting process, she added.

Child Malnutrition Worsens Global Hunger

Child Malnutrition Worsens Global Hunger, Says Report

AHEAD of this year's World Food Day billed for October 16, the latest Global Hunger Index (GHI) indicates that malnutrition among children under two years of age is one of the leading challenges to reducing global hunger.

This, going by the Index that was wired to AkanimoReports on Tuesday, can cause lifelong harm to health, productivity, and earning potential.

Released ahead of World Food Day for the fifth year, the report is published by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Welthungerhilfe, and Concern Worldwide.
The Index scores countries based on three equally weighted indicators: the proportion of people who are undernourished, the proportion of children under five who are underweight, and the child mortality rate. The biggest contributor to the global score is child undernutrition, which accounts for almost half of the score.

“To improve their scores, many countries must accelerate progress in reducing child malnutrition. Considerable research shows that the window of opportunity for improving nutrition spans from conception to age two. After age two, the negative effects of undernutrition are largely irreversible,” explained Marie Ruel, director of IFPRI’s Poverty, Health and Nutrition division and co-author of the report.

The Index is calculated for 122 developing and transition countries for which data on the three components of hunger are available. Twenty-nine countries have levels of hunger that are “extremely alarming” or “alarming.” Most of these countries are in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

While the highest regional GHI scores are for South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia has made much more progress since 1990. In South Asia, the low nutritional, educational, and social status of women is among the major factors that contribute to a high prevalence of malnutrition in children under five.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, low government effectiveness, conflict, political instability, and high rates of HIV and AIDS are among the major factors that lead to high child mortality and a high proportion of people who cannot meet their calorie requirements. In some countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, for example Burundi, Madagascar, and Malawi, about half of the children are stunted (low height for age) due to poor nutrition.

The burden of child undernutrition could be cut by 25-36 percent by providing universal preventive health services and nutrition interventions for children under two and their mothers during pregnancy and lactation.

“The health of women, specifically mothers, is crucial to reducing child malnutrition Mothers who were poorly nourished as girls tend to give birth to underweight babies, perpetuating the cycle of undernutrition,” noted Welthungerhilfe chairperson Bärbel Dieckmann. “Nutrition interventions should be targeted towards girls and women throughout the life cycle and especially as adolescents before they become pregnant.”

Grisly new footage revives horror of London bombings

AFP/File – Hazel Webb (left) and Julia Nicholson, whose children were killed during the July 7 bombings in 2005,
LONDON (AFP) – Chilling footage of the devastation wrought by the 2005 London bombings has been shown in public for the first time at the inquests into the deaths of 52 passengers.
The courtroom saw slow-moving, silent video from inside the Underground trains, revealing the bloody, scorched wreckage left by three simultaneous suicide bombings in footage filmed just hours afterwards.
The hearing on Tuesday was also told in distressing detail about each victim's final moments, pieced together from eyewitness and forensic evidence, reviving the horror of July 7, 2005.
The 8:49 am rush-hour explosions on three trains, and on a bus about one hour later, were the largest terror attacks on British soil.
The eerie forensic police footage that was screened had been edited to ensure no human remains were shown. Parts were blurred out.
The video made at Aldgate station, where seven innocent people were killed on a train, showed empty platforms.
Blood and rescue equipment were visible on the concourse.
The camera then entered the darkness of the tunnel, towards the stricken train.
The side doors of the second carriage, next to where suicide bomber Shehzad Tanweer stood, were blown out and buckled, with other doors similarly damaged.
Ladders went up to the train floor. The inside of the carriage was wrecked, the floor littered with debris. The ripped ceiling was spattered with a dark substance.
Newspapers, clothing and bags were visible in the gloom. The seats were ripped up and apparently bloodstained.
Outside the train, twisted metal lay on the tracks.
One police officer described the soot-covered and blood-soaked passengers emerging from the Aldgate tunnel as looking like "zombies".
"A number of passengers paint a terrible scene of mangled flesh, debris and metal which had descended from the ceiling," said counsel Hugo Keith, who presents the evidence to the inquest.
Keith went through each victim of the four bombings in turn, linking together evidence to tell what happened to them.
They included immigrants, young accountants, economics graduates, biomedical scientists, musicians, people soon to marry, commuters who had changed their usual routes, and men who had let others squeeze onto a previous train.
Wounded commuters tried to help their fellow passengers, attempting resuscitation, tying clothing around injured limbs and laying coats over the deceased.

Chilcot inquiry makes fact-finding visits to Iraq

Sir John Chilcot said there could be further public hearings if the evidence was not conclusive
The UK's Iraq inquiry has visited the cities of Baghdad and Basra as part of its fact-finding mission.

Members of the panel held talks with Deputy Foreign Minister Labeed Abbawi and former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi, as well as leading Iraqi officials.

Its report, into the run-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq and its aftermath, is due to be published early next year.

Inquiry chairman Sir John Chilcot promised that the panel would "seek to fill" any "gaps in the evidence".

Its public hearings in central London, which numbered former Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown among the witnesses, concluded in July.

But Sir John said there could be more sessions, if it was judged that the information gathered so far was inadequate.

'Immeasurably helpful'
From 26 September to 1 October, four of the five-member inquiry panel visited Iraq for private discussions with leading politicians and officials.

As well as Mr Abbawi and Mr Allawi, these included Iraq's planning minister Ali Baban and Ahmed Chalabi, leader of the Iraqi National Congress Party.

United Nations, European Union and World Bank officials also held discussions with the panel.

Sir John said: "Since the end of the public hearings in July, we have heard from many individuals; from British service personnel who served in Iraq, to Iraqi politicians and civilians living and working in the country today.

"All those meetings have been immeasurably helpful to the committee, and we are grateful to those who have hosted us and those who have taken the time to meet us to share their insights and experiences."

He added: "As I have said before, if there are gaps in the evidence we will seek to fill them, including seeking further written evidence or potentially holding a small number of further public hearings either with new witnesses or with those from whom we have heard before.

Record protests hit France in pensions showdown

AFP – People demonstrate in Paris against President Nicolas Sarkozy's plan to raise the age of retirement
PARIS (AFP) – French workers in several sectors were to vote Wednesday on whether to strike for a second day after more than a million people marched in the biggest protest yet against pensions reform.
The SNCF national rail company, which ran just one in three trains on Tuesday, said services would likely be as badly disrupted on Wednesday, indicating that workers were expected to renew their strike.
Strikers in the RATP Paris transport network had already voted on Tuesday to renew their action.
"This is not a last stand," said the president of the CFTC union, Jacques Voisin after Tuesday's marches.
"The movement is taking things up a notch."
The nationwide protests were the biggest since the anti-reform battle began earlier this year, unions and police said, estimating the number of demonstrators at 3.5 million and 1.23 million respectively.
That made the street protests the biggest in strike-prone France since 1995, when a month of stoppages crippled the country and forced the right-wing government at the time to drop its own pensions reform.
The strike and marches were against President Nicolas Sarkozy's pensions reform, key elements of which had already passed into law just a day earlier.
And in what some commentators saw as a significant development, students and school pupils joined the movement for the first time.
"Sarko, you're screwed, the young are on the streets," chanted students as they marched beside trade unionists and their supporters on the fourth major nationwide demonstration against pension reform in just over a month.
Travellers faced major delays, with up to half the flights to and from Paris Orly airport and one in three at the capital's Charles de Gaulle-Roissy and the smaller Paris Beauvais cancelled.

Chile celebrates as first miner is rescued

Florencio Avalos, the first miner to be rescued, (left), is embraced by Chilean President Sebastian Pinera after reaching the surface
There were few words, in the end, that Florencio Avalos could find to express the joy he felt when he finally reached the surface of the San Jose mine shortly after midnight. Just a smile as wide as the Atacama Desert as he stepped out of the Phoenix escape capsule and fell into the arms of the wife and two children that he’d last embraced almost seventy days ago.

It was a magnificent sight to see, this shy and exhausted man breathing fresh air he must have thought he’d never breathe again, and bear-hugging the men who had managed to bring him to the surface in one piece. When the cage painted in patriotic red, white and blue cleared the top of the escape shaft, the cheer that went up over Camp Hope might have been heard half way to the moon.

A cloud of balloons filled the freezing Chilean night sky and church bells were rung in the camp and across the nation. The joyous crowd, many of whom have been camped out at the surface as long as “Los 33” have been trapped underground, hugged each other, set up party poppers, and chanted the words they will surely be chanting for days: “Chi! Chi! Chi! Le! Le! Le!

Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi 'will not vote

Aung San Suu Kyi's NLD party was forced to disband under new election laws
Burma's detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi will refuse to vote in the general election on 7 November.

Her lawyer, Nyan Win, said that although her name was on a voters' list, she would not take part in a poll organised by the military.

Ms Suu Kyi's party won a landslide victory in the last election in 1990 but the junta annulled the result, and kept her in near continuous detention.

The poll is seen by many as a sham that will just cement the military's power.

Some 25% of seats are guaranteed under the new constitution for the military, which means unelected military officers will sit in parliament.

The government has also founded its own political party - the Union Solidarity and Development Party - headed by the incumbent prime minister.

Legal moves
Ms Sui Kyi is currently under house arrest and was at first excluded from the electoral roll; about 2,000 other activists are also still detained.

Her National League for Democracy (NLD) had already decided to disband to avoid having to expel Ms Suu Kyi and other detainees under strict electoral laws.

She has no party to vote for even if she is allowed to vote”

Nyan Win
Aung San Suu Kyi's lawyer
Our South East Asia correspondent Rachel Harvey says her decision not to vote may further encourage other NLD supporters to follow her lead, come election day.

That in turn will infuriate the current military leadership, she says.

"The NLD will not compete so she (Suu Kyi) said she has no party to vote for even if she is allowed to vote. As the NLD is not participating in the election, she will not vote," said Nyan Win.

He said Ms Suu Kyi had also pointed out that any grant to her of the right to vote would contravene the junta's own laws which prohibit detainees from taking part in the polls.

Her advice to followers also not to vote has been criticised by the state-controlled press.

Ms Suu Kyi's house arrest is due to expire on 13 November and she expects to be released "according to the law", Nyan Win said.

"If she is not released it is like a violation," he said.

Many Western nations and the UN are critical of Burma's poor human rights record and refusal to hand over power to Ms Suu Kyi's party in 1990.

Watch Security Council gets new members

Security Council gets new members

The Security Council will include countries that have been fighting to revamp the UN's most powerful body [AFP]
India, South Africa and Germany have all won two-year terms that will put them on the UN's Security Council at the same time as Brazil and Nigeria, important players in Latin America and Africa.

The three nations from Asia, Africa and Europe will give next year's council a unique membership of global powers and important emerging countries that have been campaigning for a revamp of the UN's most powerful body.

Colombia and Portugal were also elected in Tuesday's secret ballot.

For the first time, the Security Council will include countries that are seeking permanent seats and have been fighting to reform the body responsible for international peace and security so that it reflects the world in the 21st century.

Japan, which leaves the council at the end of the year, was also campaigning for a permanent seat.

The big loser was Canada, another major economic power which was in a three-way race for two Western bloc seats. It dropped out after Germany won in the first round by a single vote and Portugal was ahead by 35 votes in the second round.

Emerging powers

Ten of the Security Council's 15 seats are filled by regional groups for two-year stretches, with five elected each year. The other five seats are occupied by the council's veto-wielding permanent members: Britain, China, France, Russia and the US.

"It is important to note that some of the countries that are coming on are some of the most important emerging powers," Mark Lyall Grant, Britain's UN ambassador, said after the election.

"We think that all of them will bring their own unique advantages and make this a very strong security council for the next two years."

The council, also for the first time, will include major regional powers - China and India in Asia, South Africa and Nigeria in Africa, and Brazil and Mexico in Latin America.

The outgoing non-permanent members of the council are Austria, Japan, Mexico, Turkey and Uganda, whose terms end on December 31.

The five members elected last year - Bosnia, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon and Nigeria - will remain on the council until the end of 2011.

Canada's loss

Lawrence Cannon, Canada's foreign minister, said that he did not think the vote was a repudiation of the country's foreign policy, though others in Canada disagreed and blamed Stephen Harper, the prime minister.

Cannon said a statement by Michael Ignatieff, the opposition Liberal Party leader, "indicating that Canada did not deserve a seat ... was used as an issue" by Germany and Portugal "to prevent Canada from acceding to the Security Council".

"We can speculate until tomorrow, but I can't give you any definite response as to what the real issue was, but I can say that Michael Ignatieff's statements hurt us," Cannon said after the vote.

Joao Cravinho, Portugal's deputy foreign minister, said that his country was "fairly confident that in a second round we would win against either candidate.

"It turned out to be Canada, and I think that the fact that we are representative of a smaller and medium-size group of countries was, in the end, decisive."

Failed attempts

There is widespread support for revamping the Security Council but all previous attempts, starting in 1979, have failed because rivalries between countries and regions blocked agreement.

Hardeep Singh Puri, India's UN ambassador, said "naturally all of us will try and use the time that we have during this two-year tenure to also give our partners a sense of confidence and build trust so that they are comfortable with our membership of the Security Council on an extended basis".

Emma Stone Swings from Easy A to New Spider-Man

What a wonderful web she’ll weave: Emma Stone has been cast as the female lead in the upcoming Spider-Man prequel, in a role that will give viewers a glimpse into the movie’s timeframe – she’ll play Gwen Stacy, the girlfriend Peter Parker had before Mary Jane Watson.

The actress, 21, was selected after reportedly displaying an instant connection to Andrew Garfield, 27, who will play Parker/Spider-Man. “The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice,” says the director, Marc Webb.

The new Spider-Man movie will begin production in December and hit theaters in 3-D on July 3, 2012.

Although she’s known as a redhead, Stone will presumably be reverting to her natural hair color to play Stacy. “Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen – Emma – is also a natural blonde,” says Webb.

Lady Gaga “more powerful” than Nancy Pelosi

The annual list, released late Wednesday, places Winfrey third. The talk-show queen is worth $2.7 billion and earned $315 million in the past year, but beyond wealth Forbes takes into account executive position, creative influence and entrepreneurship.

No. 1 on the list is First Lady Michelle Obama. Forbes didn’t calculate her and her husband’s personal wealth or money earned in the last year, choosing instead to list in that category the country’s national budget, which is $3.5 trillion.

After Winfrey, Lady Gaga, at No. 7, is the next media person on the list. She earned $62 million in the past year and, according to Forbes, “single-handedly reinvigorated pop music and pop culture.”

Next in media, at No. 9, is Knowles, who earned $87 million and whose music is a favorite of Michelle Obama’s, according to Forbes.

Former “American Idol” judge DeGeneres is 10th on the list and earned $55 million. Forbes noted that she recently gave a $30,000 college scholarship to a gay teenager who challenged a high school policy against same-sex prom dates.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who would be in line for the presidency after Vice President Joe Biden, is 11th on the list. Like Michelle Obama, her “money” category consists of the national budget.

We drive Mazda’s revolutionary Sky petrol and diesel engines in next-gen 2013 Mazda6

30 August 2010
By MARTON PETTENDY in GERMANY
IT IS not often a car-maker lets journalists loose in – and requests feedback on – prototype vehicles underpinned by chassis and engine technologies that remain years away from production, but that’s precisely what Mazda did during a global ‘technology forum’ in Berlin last week.

GoAuto was one of just 40 media outlets in the world invited to test its future model technologies – including revolutionary new Sky G petrol and Sky D diesel engines, a revolutionary new sixth-generation chassis and the upcoming Sky Drive automatic transmission – in four pre-production mules officially known as ‘technology prove-out vehicles’, or TPVs.

The first Sky technologies will not make their way into Australian showrooms for at least 12 months – in the form of a 2.0-litre Sky G petrol engine and six-speed Sky Drive auto in selected versions of next year’s facelifted Mazda3 small-car – and the first Mazda model to combine the all-new lightweight chassis with Sky powertrain technology is unlikely to emerge in Australia before 2013, in the shape of the redesigned Mazda6.

Along with the unprecedented chance to test the four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive chassis technologies that will underpin the next generation of Mazda models first hand in real-world European conditions, Mazda revealed a range of outstanding performance and efficiency statistics for its Sky engines.

Despite the fact the brand-new chassis – which will underpin the next-generation Mazda6, the all-new Mazda3 due in 2014 and a range of SUVs including the all-new sub-compact CX-5, redesigned CX-7 and, perhaps, a new CX-9 medium SUV – will not be fully developed for up to 18 months, it is clear Mazda’s focus on lightweight chassis development has paid handsome dividends.

Equally, despite being a year away from production and with its new automatic transmission requiring a significant amount of calibration work, Mazda’s new Sky engines appear to be well on target to achieve big gains in both performance and refinement - while meeting formidable new efficiency targets that should realise Mazda’s commitment to reduce the average fuel consumption of its new model fleet by 30 per cent between 2008 and 2015.

Mazda’s plan to deliver ambitious fuel consumption and CO2 emissions reductions by developing conventional internal combustion engine technology to previously unseen levels and achieving outstanding weight reductions for all of its future models has been well documented.

But even more impressive than we expected are the first fruits of its ‘building block’ strategy, which is designed to deliver maximum efficiency gains for the widest possible range of customers without (at least initially) the use of expensive fuel-saving electrical devices like brake energy regeneration and petrol-electric hybrid drive systems.

GoAuto sampled both the upcoming 2.2-litre Sky D turbo-diesel engine and the 2.0-litre Sky G petrol engine – each equipped with new six-speed manual and automatic transmissions – in Mazda’s new sixth-generation chassis.

Mazda did not officially specify which model the Mk6 platform would first appear beneath, but provided a number of comparative figures that made it clear what we were driving was, in fact, the next-generation Mazda6 that is not due to appear for at least two years.

Cobbled up beneath the bodywork and interior of the current Mazda6 and wearing a number of riveted panel sections to disguise the fact it is shoehorned within more compact exterior body dimensions, the all-new platform comprises a 50mm-longer wheelbase combined with 18mm and 25mm wider front and rear wheel tracks respectively.

Unlike today, the larger Mazda6 platform will serve both the US and other global markets.

Watches 471 Billion Mobile VoIP Minutes By 2015

471 Billion Mobile VoIP Minutes By 2015

If you are Nimbuzz, Truphone, Skype or one of the many other Mobile VoIP companies, here is some good news: A UK-based research group says the total number of mobile VoIP minutes will jump from 15 billion in 2010 to 470.6 billion by 2015, thanks to the proliferation of 3G and 4G networks. Juniper Research says the biggest boost will come from the U.S., which will account for 135 billion mobile VoIP minutes by 2015. Juniper recently forecasted that there will be 100 million mobile VoIP users by 2012.

“There are several flavours of mobile VoIP,” says Anthony Cox, Senior Analyst at Juniper Research, noting that operators fear losing traffic to Wi-Fi networks most: “Wi-Fi mobile VoIP is potentially the most damaging of all VoIP traffic, as it bypasses the mobile networks altogether,” he says. “We forecast that mobile VoIP over Wi-Fi will cost operators $5 billion globally by 2015.”

While the traffic minutes are going to grow, it is still difficult to see how much money these mobile upstarts will be able to make. In my opinion, the likely winner of the mobile VoIP sweepstakes is going to be Skype, mostly because it has the biggest network, which allows the service to offer easy in-network calling. As for the rest of them, well, maybe the carriers who hate them so much will end up buying them.

Watch 2015 is New Magic Date for Fuel Cell Vehicles

2015 is New Magic Date for Fuel Cell Vehicles

Wishing upon a star or throwing a coin in a well might make dreams come true, but when it comes to fuel cell vehicles, auto industry executives are hoping that chanting in unison will turn hopes into reality. The mantra from execs: “Fuel cell cars for sale by 2015.”

Honda FCX Clarity
In the past few weeks, Ford, Toyota and Daimler have expressed and reiterated their commitment to bringing hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles to market in six years, with Honda pushing its target date to 2018.

The US Department of Energy announced that it will be pulling the plug on fuel cell research and development—and California is threatening to slash its spending on building a hydrogen refueling infrastructure—but automakers are holding firm to their new timeline for hydrogen.

Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche told Speigel Magazine in March that annual production of fuel cell cars will need to reach 100,000 units to be considered commercially viable, and that vehicle prices could be comparable to “premium” gasoline cars by around 2015.
Toyota.s spokesperson John Hanson said in June, “Toyota is planning to go ahead with its program in certain world markets by 2015, if not sooner.”
Speaking in June at the Edison Electric Institute conference, Ford CEO Alan Mulally saw 2015 as the date that fuel cell cars would go on sale. Mulally hedged when reminded of the US government.s cut in fuel cell research funding. “That pushes out the timeframe for commercialization,” he said.
At a recent fuel cell conference, GM.s Larry Burns also agreed with the 2015 dates, commenting: “General Motors is committed to developing a hydrogen fuel cell car despite its bankruptcy and a huge cut in (federal) research dollars for the zero-emission (hydrogen) vehicle.” Dave Barthmuss, GM's West Coast regional PR manager, said last week, “We don't need any more breakthroughs to bring the [fuel cell] cars into the commercial market by 2015."
Honda.s Steve Ellis, manager of fuel cell vehicle sales and marketing, told an audience at a National Hydrogen Association webinar in June that Honda is looking at 2018 as its magic date, but is already producing the FCX Clarity on a regular production line.
Waiting for a Miracle?

Despite repeated statements pinpointing 2015 for delivering fuel cell cars, automakers acknowledge two major hurdles in reaching that goal: high costs and lack of infrastructure. As Andreas Truckenbrodt, chief executive of the Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation—a Daimler-Ford venture to advance fuel cells for vehicles—said, “Fuel cells work fine. The number one focus is now on cost reductions, and we know how to get there. Do you really think we would be spending billions if we were waiting for a miracle?”

But a miracle might be required for producing and selling fuel cell cars in any significant numbers by 2015. The hydrogen-refueling infrastructure remains a distant, and extremely expensive, dream. The federal government and the State of California are both wavering on previous commitments to spend the required large sums of money on building hydrogen stations—begging the question of who will buy fuel cell cars without knowing where they will find fuel. If the US commitment to this technology wavers, auto companies may shift their focus to more markets, such as Japan and Germany.

Most industry analysts do not expect commercialization of fuel cell cars until 2020, at the earliest. As the move to plug-in cars—plug-in hybrids and electric cars—builds momentum, carmakers that have heavily invested in fuel cell technologies will feel increased pressure to justify the expense and convince their stakeholders that fuel cells are coming sooner than expected.

2015 is a year in the 21st century.

By this time in history, technology had progressed as much during the 30 years since 1985 as it had during the previous 30 years from 1955-1985. Electronics were in virtually everything from clothing to garbage cans to make them move, talk and/or make electronic noises.
Flying cars, once they were invented and perfected, had become so common that drivers no longer needed roads. Skyways dominated the skies of central California and eventually the entire world. Cultural influences from other countries, particularly Japan, were more often seen in food and clothing.
Life was lived at a quicker pace than before, in evidence by the speed that people walked down the street, the time it took to cook dinner, and the swiftness of court trials.
Hill Valley underwent a period of gentrification, or revitalization of its downtown. With an increased concern for the environment, the Courthouse Square was landscaped with a large lake, and businesses were brought back with the construction of an underground Courthouse Mall.

Watch First Hotel on the Moon Finally Opens

First Hotel on the Moon Finally Opens

August 23, 2025 - Today a new chapter in space tourism was written. Rod Markham and his wife-to-be Susan Millster arrived safely to the moon to spend 5 days as the first guests at the Starbright Hotel that was set up for this purpose two years ago.
Not are they only the first hotel guests on the moon, they also set a new record for expensive accommodation since the price was US$ 3,7 million per night, per person. However, the exclusive transfer from earth to the hotel was included in the price.

The hotel itself will probably have a tough time just to try to gain one star at any hotel rating system, since there is no room service, the guests have to do the cleaning of the room themselves and there is no bathroom in them. However, they have more stars than they need just outside their window.

Rod and Susan will get married through link by their local minister in San Diego, California at 9.00pm EST tonight, and the wedding will be broadcasted live by several major TV networks in a 1-hour special including the preparations for the trip.

They were accompanied by six other astronauts that during the stay will set up further accommodations for the guests that have made reservations at the Starbright Hotel next year. The hotel has so far no employees, only temporary staff when guests.

Argument: Apart from the few tourists that already have been out in space, commercial space flights will be available in 2008 through companies like Space Adventures and Virgin Galactic, even though they will just be out in space for a short time. Since several organizations plan to put the first man on Mars by 2030, new trips to the moon will take place around 2015-2020. That combined with the increasing interest in space tourism in the next decade will open up to the possibility to make a reservation on the moon.

Questions: How will the first permanent accommodations on the moon look like? Will we be able to follow space flights live on TV, like today's reality shows? What will a vacation on the moon be like, what would the exclusive attractions be apart from the view?

Watch Hottest Summer Ever in Taiwan

Hottest Summer Ever in Taiwan

August 25, 2035 - This summer is considered as the hottest ever in Taiwan. The temperature will for the first time average over 35 degrees Celsius for more than 60 days during the summer. The heat is causing power shortages due to air conditioners in homes and factories.
Authorities report that a lot of elderly and homeless have died of heat stroke. Another concern is water shortages in several parts of the country to come later on as a result of the heat, and it can seriously affect agriculture where 70-75% of the water is used.

30 years ago the temperature only average over 35 degrees for 40 days, but due to the global warming it will continue to increase during this century.

Argument: According to Professor Liu Chung-ming of National Taiwan University's Global Change Research Center two-thirds of Taiwan's summer will average over 35 degrees Celsius by 2035, due to global warming.

Questions: How can people prepare to cope with heat waves in the future since they will be more common because of the global warming?

Watch Taming Hurricane Pedro Gives Hope for the Future

Taming Hurricane Pedro Gives Hope for the Future

August 29, 2040 - Analysts believe that the effort in taming the hurricane Pedro is the main reason for it to still be considered a category four hurricane, before it reached the coast of southern Florida today. This is the first time ever a major hurricane has been affected in a measurable way by humans.
The hurricane fighting fleet of airplanes was alerted five days ago and has since then been spraying the ocean surface around Pedro's eye with a mix based on biodegradable oil to slow down the evaporating that feeds the hurricane. Even though progress have been made calculating the development of a hurricane, it is still difficult to determine the exact effect of the spraying, but analysts believe it is the reason that the wind speed has not increased.

It is hard to tell exactly what kind of damages a category five hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale could do to the southern part of Florida. Estimations show that the difference between a category four and five hurricane could equal 10% of the damages, which if Pedro was in a bad mood, could be about US$ 17 billion. If these estimations are correct, the much debated investment in the hurricane fighting fleet was well worth it.

The taming of Pedro gives good hope for the future since the number of hurricanes has increased during the last 30 years, mainly because of the global warming. Hurricanes need a water temperature of at least 27 degrees Celsius which has become more common during this period.

Argument: According to Ross N. Hoffman, Vice President of Atmospheric and Environmental Research, it is possible to control hurricanes, by coating the ocean surface with a thin film of a biodegradable oil that slows evaporation. The estimated cost is based on the damage that the hurricane Andrew caused in Florida in 1992, in the value of year 2040.

Questions: Are there other ways to control hurricanes? How well will future computer power and software help us in calculating the weather in general and hurricanes in particular?

Can Paralyzed Walk in the Future?

September 5, 2035 - More than 20,000 quadriplegics around the world have now got a BCI, a Brain Computer Interface. It gives them the ability to control their environment, from driving their own electric wheelchairs outside their house, to make their own dinner.
The BCI consists of an internal sensor to detect brain cell activity and external processors that convert these brain signals into a computer-mediated output under the person's own control. The sensor is implanted on the surface of the area of the brain responsible for movement, the motor cortex, and is then wireless connected to a computer. The first successful implanted BMI was BrainGate for more than 30 years ago, which then gave the patient the ability to move a cursor on a screen and play a simple computer game.

BCI is mainly for people with severe motor impairments from spinal cord injury, ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) or other motor neuron diseases

Steve Nelson from Hoboken, New Jersey has had his BCI for 3 years: "It definitely changed my life, after being completely stuck in my chair for several years after the accident. We have connected everything in my apartment to the software that I control with my mind. I can even go out of my apartment, take the elevator down and go for a tour downtown, without anyone assisting me. With the robotic hand at my chair I can open the freezer, take out the food I want, and cook it myself." However, how well this work of course differs from individual to individual and some criticism has been heard that the BCI is given to people who could not benefit from it for different reasons.

The developing of the BCI software and the experience from the increasing number of users now gives hope that legs and arms can be activated by thought only. Tests are currently made on people with BCI and if the result is positive a solution can be on the market in the near future.

Even though improvements have been made towards cloning of human organs scientists agree that there are still some years left for them to successfully help a person with spinal cord damage to walk again.

Argument: Tests with the BrainGate Neural Interface System have been successful, proving the possibility for a quadriplegic to move a cursor on a screen by thought only.

Questions: In what other ways can quadriplegics control their environment with their mind? When will it be possible to help a person with spinal cord damage to walk again?

Watch First Tourist Heading for Mars

First Tourist Heading for Mars

September 21, 2050 - At a press conference today it was announced that the first tourist heading for Mars will be the 38-year-old US businessman Patrick Clifford. He will leave the earth in the launching window of June 2052 and set his foot on the surface of Mars in November, together with the other 6 astronauts assigned for the mission to further explore the planet.
Patrick has now two years of training ahead of him to get ready for the trip. Not only will he spend five months in getting to Mars, but another 600 days there before he can go back home. Patrick was of course very excited: "This has been my dream since I was four, and seeing the first man on Mars 20 years ago made me realize that it was possible."

To be able to pay the US$ 1.3 billion for his ticket for the trip Patrick sold his majority stake in the business empire his father had built. "I know that my father would have been proud of me if he had still been alive today, he knew what this means to me", says Patrick. There is no risk though that you will find Patrick begging in your street corner when he comes back, rumors says that he was paid twice as much for his part of the company.

So, how is he going to spend his 600 days on the red planet? "Well, since I don't have a job when I get back after selling the company, I have plenty of time to come up with a new business idea", he says and laughs. If he brings a shovel he can start building the first hotel there, but maybe he shouldn't expect too many guests until someone can offer a lower transfer fare.

Argument: Several organizations plan to put the first man on Mars by year 2030 and the developing of space tourism during the next decades will give the possibility of bringing "tourists" to Mars. According to Nasa the most likely way to go will be a "Long-Stay Mission (fast transit)" with 4-6 months to get there and a 600 days stay before returning.

Questions: What possibilities will occur due to the exploration of Mars this century? Will Mars become a tourist destination in the future although you have to stay for 600 days before you can return to earth?

The HANNSoccer 28 TV looks like some something you might find in one corner of a kids room, but put aside this generalization because this small TV has been developed for soccer (football) fans of all ages.
Designed by the folks at Hannspree, this 28-inch HD TV supports full 1080p and includes a Freeview tuner. Given a choice, most sports fans would probably want to watch the big game on a large screen TV, but the HANNSoccer 28 TV might be something that you could put in a quiet corner of the home or perhaps in a garage.
This soccer ball shaped TV is priced at $600 and includes noise reduction technology, a sleep timer and a pair of 10w speakers. For other novelty televisions, be sure to check out the football arena shaped screen that is coming out for FIFA 2010.

Watch THE LATEST UPCOMING LAPTOP THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU

THE LATEST UPCOMING LAPTOP THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU

The best thing about technology is that it improves and develops continuously. This probably is also the most challenging bit about technology that a buyer finds difficult to deal with. The laptop that is right for you will depend solely on your need. The most important question for you to answer is: why do I need a laptop?

The latest laptops are full of features enhancing connectivity, usability, communication and also your comfort. They are lighter, faster and sport trendy looks. Following are some of the outstanding features of the latest upcoming laptops. You will also understand which feature provides you what kind of service and whether you need that or not.

RAM: RAM or random access memory determines the amount of bits a programme can use while it runs on your laptop. The more programmes that you need to work on, the higher should be the RAM of your laptop. If you are a multimedia developer, a gamer or an architect, you would need a laptop with higher RAM so that you can run a number of programmes simultaneously without affecting the speed adversely.

The latest upcoming laptops have installed RAM from 1GB to 4GB (Sony VAIO SZ). You can also upgrade RAM. So it is best that you choose a laptop where extra memory can be added.

Hard Drive: Hard Disc Drive (HDD) or hard drive as it is most commonly known as stores digitally encoded data in your laptop. Simply speaking it is the HDD that stores the newly created data and the old data even after the power supply is turned off. So if you want to play games and store your progress, keep latest flicks and music in your laptop, share it with someone else, keep a backup of your work, you will need a laptop with bigger HDD.

These days laptops come with even 200GB hard disk. That’s a huge storage area. Remember though, a bigger hard drive also means heavier weight.

Processor: Processor is simply put the brain of your laptop. It processes all the instruction that you enter on your laptop, starting from typing a word document to playing a game.

Most manufacturers use either Intel processors or AMD processors. Intel Processors has a slower internal clock rate than AMD Processors. If you want high end graphics quality then AMD processor is your pick. But remember to check if your laptop has the latest version of the processor. The latest set of processors is Intel Core 2 Duo from Intel and AMD Opteron and Athlon Dual Core from AMD.
Connectivity: Connectivity is the need of the hour. You want to keep your laptop as mobile as possible. Look for a Bluetooth and wireless enabled laptop if you want to stay connected wherever you go. Again the latest upcoming laptops come with a bouquet of wireless connectivity options. Also to consider is the number of USB ports in your laptop so that you can use the telephone, broadband or Ethernet connections as well as connect your laptop with other compatible devices like printer, camera, mobile phone etc.
