Sony’s BDX-S500U Blu-Ray Drive Shows Us How Fast is Too Fast

The BDX-S500U from Sony is an external Blu-Ray drive that really pushes the limits of the USB 2.0 technology it’s saddled with. It can shred through single layer BD-R discs at up to 6X and dual layer discs only slow it down a little. (They suffer a mere 4X burn speed.) Sounds great until you realize that that exceeds the max transfer speed for the cable between it and your PC.

SO before you jump out and buy this thing and think you’re getting the best of the best, you may want to rethink that. The max transfer speed for USB 2.0 is 60 MBs. Unfortunately, in the real world, those cables are often limited to around half that or even less—which is why the 27MBs that the Sony drive is trying to shove down it’s throat might leave it a little choked up.

You have to wonder if Sony is playing a little joke on those technophiles that will rush out and buy anything that says it’s the fastest. I mean, USB 3.0 is on the verge of becoming mainstream so why not just wait?

Still, if you want a top-of-the-line Blu-Ray burner, by all means, drop the prerequisite $240 on one.
