Call of Duty: Black Ops will be playable in 3D

Although most first-person shooters are 3D in a rendering sense, they are still displayed on the two-dimensional plane of a display. Because FPS games render in 3D though, it’s actually trivial to make them truly three-dimensional with the use of glasses: just add a second camera. Easy. So why don’t we see more games in 3D?

I don’t have answers to that, but for those of us who would like to play more truly 3D first person shooters, we have at least one title to look forward to. Treyarch Studios has just announced that when their upcoming Call of Duty game Black Ops launches on November 9th, 2010, it’ll include a 3D option right out of the box.

It sounds pretty useful too:

According to Puryear, an FPS was a logical choice for the implementation of 3D, thanks to the gametype itself, as well as the environments. Treyarch points out that, while you progress through the title, players will now be able to see the depth of when their character is holding a weapon, or see that cover actually looks like cover, as it has depth of field within the playspace. Whether it’s just a box or a car, players will be able to tell that it’s present on the field, and has range.

Unfortunately, if you want to play in 3D, you’ll need a 3DTV on the 360 and PS3 versions, and NVIDIA 3D Vision on the PC, so this is just a novelty feature for most of us. Still, though… it’s a start.
