Recon Instruments promised some pretty impressive new goggles for winter sports enthusiasts and they’re now available for your insane sporting pleasure. These new “Transcend” goggles feature and built-in GPS unit that displays your latitude and longitude in true first-person-shooter style via a tiny little screen mounted in the lower right of the lens.
These are billed as the world’s first GPS enabled goggles but I wouldn’t be surprised if that superlative was limited to the consumer electronics world (James Bond and his pals have to have had something like this already.) Still, they are pretty snazzy.

The multi-color micro-LCD displays not only your coordinates but your current speed, the distance you’ve travelled, and temperature as well as rocking a clock feature. “Well-Rounded” really doesn’t describe this tech.
There are two models available currently and both are under $500! The Transcend SPPX features a polarized and photo chromatic lens for just $499 while the SPX sports a simple polarized version for $399.
Chances are, if you’re truly into outdoor sports, you’ve spent twice that on some of your gears. And even if you aren’t, these goggles are great because they eliminate the need for a dedicated GPS unit—or dedicated goggles for that matter.
Both versions are available for purchase now, just in time for the 2010 winter sports season. Coincidence? I think not.
